The chasing went on forever. I was forced to trample a littlun and I was backed into a corner before I could finally flee to the beach. The smoke filled he air and visibility was practically impossible. I finally stumbled onto the warm and soft sand and to all endless astonishment, i could see a ship beyond i the horizon and I was standing in front of a highly suited naval officer with epaulettes. I was so surprised that I couldn't even remember my won name. He asked who was responsible for the group of kids on the island and I said that I was. Jack didn't say a word he sat back and let me take the blame. The naval officer was horrified at the events that occurred he said that we should have behaved like the Englishmen that we were and not lunatic savages like Jack and his tribe. Everything caught up to me so fast that I broke out into tears. It was finally over.

Simon's Perspective on his Death
Hello my name is Simon. Recently I was murded by the savage boys on the island that we were stranded on. Before my death, I was sent off to go and tell Piggy that we were going to the fire however I got lost and I was wandering without any sense of direction. I went up the mountain to see if the boys were by the fire and suddenly I saw a dead man hanging from his parachute in a tree. It suddenly hit me that this was what they thought was the beastie. I headed straight for the fire that I saw in the distance. Brushes of forest scraped against my leg and I finally stumbled out into the open I panted and yelled about the pilot. They ran towards me and the rest went black.
Suddenly I was looking down at the boys destroying me and I finally saw the truth about the boys on the island. I saw the horrors of evil and human nature. I went over to the huts where Ralph and Piggy lay horrified. these two were the only ones that didn't join in. They were the only civilized people on this island. When I went closer I could hear the talk of the two boys. Ralph still, like me, had not processed the savagery that just took place. Piggy was too busy thinking of what to say to the adults. I couldn't blame him though. They had nothing to do with the things that happened on the island they were just there as I was.
Jack's tribe is the main start of this whole mess. He is the leader of the hunter's and doesn't understand that they need to be rescued. It seems that if he could have it his way, he would live there for the rest of his life alone and hunt pigs. The other boys for some reason follow him and do what he wishes. Their idea was that I was the beastie in disguise. He keeps saying that he is done playing games but he isn't living in the real world if all he cares about is killing and and stealing. I am not sure what to say about my death. It was a dark night with lightning and thunder and I guess Piggy was right when he said I was a bit batty. I over heard him talking to his tribe when they were eating and he was going over his rules with the boys. His three main rules are 1: don't bother the beastie. 2: Always leave the head of the pig for the beastie as a kind offering (that explains the one that talked to me). 3: Castle rock must always be guarded. He is paranoid of Ralph trying to sneak in.
After I listened to Ralph and Piggy, I went over to Castle Rock and I over heard Jack's plans about the fire. He wanted to go get fire from the Ralph and his tribe. They went when it was dark and they were asleep. Instead of taking the fire as a torch, the pinched Piggy's glasses and ran off in the dark leaving the boys russeling around confused. There is not very much hope for the island in the sun.

Shadows And Tall Trees
The Hunt of The Beast
Ralph’s Perspective
1. What is the game the boys play after spearing the pig? Who spears the pig? Describe the mood of the boys afterwards.
After I threw the spear into the pig and made it run off, we acted out hunting a real pig in the moors. Robert got on the floor and acted like the squealing noises while everyone chanted, “ Kill the big, slit his throat, Kill the pig Bash him in!” They do that after every hunt and that makes them excited and eager. We shouted with energy and imperviously got louder and louder. We pretended to throw imaginary spears at Robert and act out hunting. I do have to admit that it was pretty exhilarating.
2. Jack suggests, “You could get someone to dress up as a pig and then he could act, you know, pretend to knock me over and all that.” Robert said that they need a real pig because it has to be killed. What does Jack suggest as a substitute? What does this foreshadow?
Jack says that they could use a littlun as the pig. This shows that he doesn’t care about the littluns’ well being as much as I do. Before the hunt, I said that we should leave someone with them so that they were safe. Jack said that we need all the help we can get if the beast is as big as Samneric said it was. I said that it might come to the beach and get them but all he said bravado was “sucks to the littluns.” I think that something is going to happen with the littluns later and that I will be in charge of helping them.
3. What evidence did the boys find to prove that there is a beast? (Why are they so gullible?)
In the middle of the night, Samneric came running down the mountain and woke me up. They were in charge of keeping the fire going and I was kind of mad that they left it. Then, they told me that the beastie had chased them down the hill. I set a meeting even if they were windy to allow us to discuss what to do. They were pretty gullible because it was dark and they were pretty much alone. It was probably a very dun sight.
4. What did you daydream about home?
The one thing that I really miss about home is the ability to bath and take care of my hygiene. I wish that I could have those little things that I unsagely used to take for granted back and be able to feel clean again.

Beast From The Air
More about the Beast
Ralph’s Perspective
In Chapter 5, Ralph cries, “If only they could get a message to us…if only they could send us something grown up….a sign or something,” (Golding, 83).
• What sign comes down from the grown up world?
The sign that comes down from the grown up world in my opinion is the beasty. It shows an enemy that is greater than each other. It says that we need to be brought together in times when things are tough and work as a team. The monster will help us understand each other.
• Why aren’t the boys aware of it?
We don’t exactly notice it because it is very subtle. We had the same idea but we didn’t have to agree with each other we did it on instinct. The only one who actually disagreed was Ralph, but we still over powered him. He was embroiled our troubles and now we are hunting.
• Why are Sam ‘n Eric so terrified?
Sam and Eric if you ask me are pretty big babies. There is nothing to be afraid of the beasty. I want to just want to end this fear and live happily on the island. The fear keeps going on interminable.
• How do Sam ‘n Eric describe the beast?
We have been looking for a huge monster with wings and claws. Apparently it’s not very fast because it couldn’t catch up to Sam and Eric and it didn’t leave foot prints. All I want to do is het it and kill it. We went out on a hunt to find it and I am surprised that Ralph agreed with me but I wish he saw it more how I saw it. We went to the pile of rocks in the back of the island and we were sure that it was the place. However, when we went in, all we saw was rocks covered with guano and a good fort. I wish we could have kept it but Ralph was furious and mutinously, we let him be the leader.
• What is the attitude of the boys when going off to look for the beast?
When we went to hunt the beast, I guess we went waxy, but also with and urge to go do something important. We wanted to end the crying at night of the littluns.
Why do you really not care about being rescued?
It’s not that I don’t want to be rescued It’s just I’d rather live my life on this island to the fullest and I highly doubt that we will be rescued. This is the life, hunting pigs, playing at the beach, eating, and sleeping; what more could you want?

Beast From The Water
Simon’s Interview on Chapter Five
Why is an assembly called? What concerns are brought up? How do you feel about those concerns?
Today an assembly was called because of the ludicrous incident that happened early. Jack was out hunting and we were in the bathing pool and suddenly, we saw a ship. The first thing that we did was go running up the mountain to see if the fire was still going. If it was still on, then the ship would be able to see us. When we got up to it, we found out that the fire was out. Then we had to get Piggy’s glasses to start the fire however before we could get it to start, the ship was gone out of sight. Jack’s only job was to keep the fire going and he failed to do so. Ralph called the meaning because we missed one of our chances to be rescued all because Jack didn’t do his job but instead was distracted by hunting.
Why do you think the littluns cry in their sleep? What was Percival Wemys Madison afraid of?
Sometimes, at night, I hear the littluns lamentation. They are probably missing their parents however I can’t help thinking it’s for a different reason. They cry at night because they’re afraid of the beasty. After we already explained that it’s not possible, Percival Wemys Madison said that he thought it was coming from the water. This had scared the littluns even more. And on top of all of this, he told us of his nightmare when he was surrounded by beasties outside of he hut and then when he woke up everything was gone however there was something in the bushes. We later found out that that was me.
What do you think is “the dirtiest thing there is” about human nature?
The dirtiest thing abut humans is their stride for power. Right now on the island, there is a rivalry between Jack and Ralph. In the begging, we voted on who would be our leader and Ralph one. But over the past events, the littluns are starting to like Jack more because he brings them meat and isn’t strict. He is very jeering towards Ralph. Horrible things are happening because of Jack’s stride for power of our group.
Explain the passage written about you: “Simon became inarticulate in his effort to express mankind’s essential illness. Inspiration came to him. What’s the dirtiest thing there is?”
In the midst of the discursive meeting, Ralph and Jack started to yell at each other and then every one joined in. I asked a question that made everyone think and I would like to explain more about it. I wanted them to think of why they were yelling in incantation. Suddenly, it all stopped and somehow, Jack ended up walking away with a group of littluns and hunters.
What are you suggesting about human nature when you ask that question?
When I ask that question, I am making them think of where 6they are going with the fighting. Soon enough, they will be a bunch of wild animals killing and eating. As long as you know the problem of something and stick to it, you can fix the problem.
In the end, Jack walked away with his group. Piggy’s suggested that Ralph should blow the conch to get them to come back. He hesitated however, he ended up letting them go to think about them.

Piggy’s Diary
The Hunt
Dear Diary,
Today was an important day for us. As you know, the time is 1940 and the war is going on. All of the boys in London are being shipped to safety and I am one of them. We were put on a plane and flew the farthest I have ever been. It was really scary but exciting at the same time. Then, something out of the extraordinary happened. We were shot down by an enemy plane (well at least that’s what the other boys say). When we crash landed, the pieces fell out of the air and I went flying on to the beach. When I got up, and finished panicking, I found another boy. His name was Ralph. This was five days ago.
Now, we have set rules for the island. Because we the only ones on the island with no adults, it is important that we stay calm and wait until we are rescued. We voted on Ralph and he is our leader. We made a rule that whoever holds the conch is the one who can talk. Also, we split up into groups and found out the jobs of each other.
I have had some trouble adjusting to living on this island. It for one is a lot of work. Because of my asthma, I am limited to a lot of things and so I have trouble. Also, there isn’t very much food and I don’t have the best place to sleep.
So far, amazing and terrible things have happened however we are still going. We have built a fire for use as a signal for ships along the coast. The most important thing, Ralph says, is being rescued. Jack’s job along with hunting is to keep the fire going. He split the choir group in two different groups that are in charge of different things. Today the impalpable things happened. First, We began our day with a bit of arguing and I received a few unkindly words from Jack and then everyone went off in their different ways. Jack took some of his group hunting; Ralph went with Simon and me to work on the shelters and irresponsible littleuns stayed and played by the beach. The morning went by normally, we went to the beach and bathed and jumped into the water but then, we saw a ship. In amazement, we jumped with joy and blatant cheers.
The first thing that we did was run up the mountain to check the fire. Was it still going? Could they see us? The others sprinted however I got tired and slowed down. They started to wait for me malevolently the decided to head up the mountain with out me. My asthma really kicked in and so I had to sit down and breathe.
When I finally got to the top of the mountain, sadness faded over me. I noticed that the fire was out and so I started to try to light it but it was too late. The ship had turned away and now it was out of visual. JACK. All any of us could think of was the thought of our hope being smashed by a two ton hammer. Then, The most obnoxious thing happened. Jack came marching up proudly with a piece of meat slouched on his shoulder. He finally hunted a pig. The pig was dropping gouts of blood on to the rocky mountain. It was gross. I looked at him and then at Ralph. “There was a ship,” Ralph said in an unamuzed tone. He said it again. Jack ignorantly waved the comment by and mentioned his pig again. It was like balm for any of the bad hunting days that he had in the past. The way they did it was by painting their faces with clay our something and by closing in on it. They kept yelling a stupid chant in honor of the event. I told him that he should have kept the fire going and for some reason, he took it the wrong way and punched me right there in the stomach. I sat down and let out the pain. I know that there is going to be some rebellion against Ralph, and it’s not going to be pretty. I got back up and realized that my glasses were missing. I didn’t have to stumble around long because Simon helped me by seeing them. It turns out the he broke the lenses that arrogant fool. I always have hated him. When it came to roasting and eating the pig, everyone got a piece but me and when I complained, Jack yelled at me. Simon again, showed his faith and gave me his piece. Luckily he got another. I can tell that there is going to be some rivalry between Jack and Ralph.

Huts On The Beach
Journal Entry #3
Ralph and the Huts
Hello, My name is Ralph. I am a ninth grader and I live in London England. The time is the 1940's and WW2 is going on. Because of this, A ll of the boys in the country are getting sent to safety. During the plane ride, something terrible happened. The back of our plane caught on fire from enemy shots and we went down on an island in the middle of the ocean. There are no adults and I am the leader of the group. It is my responsibility to keep these boys in order and deliver them to safety.
Today, our goal was to build houses. I have to say that we had vicissitudes trying to get them to stand up. It was easy to get the first one to be sturdy but the kids got tired and they wandered off, either bathing of eating fruit. I guess you could say that I was tired to but that still didn't over power the need for shelter. There were two main reasons why we needed these shelters. The only one that anyone would admit was to keep dry if it ever rained like it did when we first got stranded here. But the main reason, that I knew because of the light susurration, was because of the bestie. The bestie was mentioned in one of our first meetings when we all grouped up. A little boy about six years old encountered a large snake slithering o the ground that almost scared him to death. Ever since that meeting, there has been fear on this island. I want the boys to have a place like their home.
Jack went hunting this morning and I didn't hear from him for a while. His group came back about early afternoon however, there was no sign of him. He has this mad compulsion to kill a pig and bring the meet but he never does. He came when me and Simon were stabilizing the hut and was deeply out of breathe he drank water and sat. He still hadn't caught anything. He said that he was going to go back and hunt some more but I didn't think that he could get one. It is the thought of blood that holds him back. He is rapt but I still understand where he is coming from He is trying to prove himself. But that doesn't mean that he has to be a hero. His job was to be in control of the hunters and that's all he has to do. The fire isn't being kept up as much as it should be and I am starting to get worried about being rescued.
We started to talk about what was going to happen to us on the island and who was doing their jobs. The young ones I understand however even the older ones went of into the water. It is very inscrutable to me but Simon is the only one who actually holds his word. He stayed and helped me finish the last shelter and he listens to what I say. He contrite whenever something goes wrong even when it's not his fault and he is simply loyal.
I am worried about what is coming to happen. I hope that my father will come and rescue us but until then, the most important task right now is survival. I want to keep everyone calm so that we can keep up our work and think things out. Building things and making a community is the only way that I can keep these guys assured and full of hope. Their opaque faith makes them uneasy but I feel that I can drive them to be cheery.

Fire On The Mountain
Jack’s Journal Entry #2

Dear journal,
Today was a successful day. After finding out where we were after our plane got shot down mercifully by the enemy, we discovered that we were indeed on an island. We also, no matter how much it hurt me, we chose a boy named Ralph as our leader. I have grown a liking to him and I think we will be friends. On top of making this decision no matter how disobedient the kids are, we have also made a rule that during the meetings, whoever holds the conch is the only one who can talk. Personally, it is not my favorite rule however I guess it is a good way to create order. I am in charge of the hunters and being the only one with a knife on the island, this decision was wise.
Today we have had a meeting and talked about what we should do about us being stranded on the island. One of the younger boys was officious to tell us about his encounters before he saw us. But he ended up cracking and telling us that he saw a large beastie in the forest. The other kids laughed at him however all I cared about was going and killing it. The choir is my group and I am in charge of them. I expect to bring loads of meat for the group. I can assure you that we wont starve. Ralph told us not to worry about the snake because they are only in big countries like Africa and India. After the younger boy was finished making a fool about himself, Ralph told us that we should find a way to make a signal for ships to come and rescue us. He was positive that his dad was going to rescue us but I am excited for our adventures on this island. When the errant kids settled down, Ralph suggested that we make a fire atop the mountain as a signal. He said that the smoke would be seen from miles away and that we would be rescued in no time.
With that mention of fire, the boys capered with ebullience and ran up the hill. I followed and pushed my way to the front. When we got up there, I ordered the boys to find wood and things to make a fire. We worked, making trips up and down the hill gathering leaves and branches for the fire.
By the time Ralph made his way to us, the pile was stacked up higher than some of the boys in our group. We tried to find out ideas in order to make the fire start. Ralph tried to use a couple of sticks to make the fire however it didn’t work. I asked if anyone had matches and naturally, that was the one thing that no one had. We were left thinking. We had this huge pile of debris and nothing to start a fire with. Then one of the boys said to use Piggy’s glasses. When I went over to take them, he shooed me away, telling me to use something else. “Shut up!” I yelled at him as he went on about how he couldn’t see. I ended up having to pinch them straight from his face.
The smoke started instantly it grew and grew and I blew it to a bigger and bigger flame. It soon started roaring and raised up 20 feet. We all stood gazing at what we had created. “Get more wood!” I shouted as it started to die down from the wind. As they tossed more objects into the fire, it grew however the wind picked up causing it to go side ways. Suddenly, something awful happened. The flames spread over the side of the mountain like a blanket on a cold winter day.
It spread like a forest fire and looked like the devil’s home. “This fire isn’t right. Now look what you guys have done. With the brief mention of fire, you all ran like children on to the mountain. Now look what you have done. It’s a god forsaken forest fire that diminishes the side of the mountain!” Piggy said stupidly. “Shut up! Oh and you had it hard, you merely sat here while we worked” I yelled. The crowd went into roar as the shouted. All of a sudden, someone asked where the boy who talked about the snake went. No one could find him.
“He was standing right over there,” a boy said looking into the deep depths of the flames. Ralph stumbled, “Piggy! It was your job to take names!” He made some excuse about how no one was in order and that they were impossible to take control. We are looking for the boy who cried snake. Still. This is a reason why I can’t trust Piggy.

The Sound of the Shell
Simon
Hello, my name is Simon. I am in the quire at my school. I am also a bright boy. The Second World War is going on and every kid in my city had to evacuate because of the bombing. On the plane, something terrible happened. The plane started shaking and I heard the pilot say that we wee crashing. Fear spread over me as I started to panic. I heard the boy next to me saying his prayers. Then, every thing went in to a blur and I passed out.
When I awoke, I lay in the scar of a plane crash. I got up and saw the wreckage of the plane. I looked for my quire group. They were under the canopy in the corner. A couple of the guys had some cuts and bruises however no one, that I saw, was badly hurt. When I got over to the group, they were trying to figure out where we were. Some of them were saying that they thought it was an island but Jack, the precentor, was not convinced. He climbed went up the mountain to get a better look. Not even 5 minutes later, we heard the sound of a trumpet.
The sound echoed across the mountain and we all started to head toward it. It sounded like it was coming from the beach, so we headed through the forest. “Wait for me!” Jack sprinted in to the front and we continued. We pushed back the fronds and we were on the beach. Finally, we saw what we were hoping for… people. There were two boys sitting on a platform like object that ran along the beach. When we got closer, we could see that there was the group from the plain sitting before them. The taller looking one out of the two was holding a shell. Jack yelled to the boy standing on the platform with enormity to see the man with the trumpet. He yelled back that he was the man. As we got on the the platform, everything went black… again.
When I awoke, they were talking about the plane crash. The people I was with laughed as I was conscious again. “Is there any adults on this island?” Jack asked. “No” said the broader looking boy. Soon, the group was arguing about the leader of the group. They decided to vote between Jack and the guy with the conce shell who I later learned was Ralph. When it came down to voting, I had to vote for Jack no matter how much I wanted to vote for Ralph. In the end, the boy with the conce one and I was happy. There is something about Jack's conciededness and need for power that over rules him for a leader. The group roared with excitment and they formed a unity. The choir was chosen to be the hunters but before we could do anything, Jack, Ralph and me had to go explore where we were. We climbed a mountain, exploring the jungles and rocks. We climbed up one of the rocks and we could see a reef in the ocean. In the distance, we saw another mountain so we went down and climbed it. In order to climb to the top, we had to move a giant boulder. We strained and it finally went over.
Boom! It went down hard. We stood in amazement, looking down at the remains. Finally, we headed to the top. It was beautiful; blue flowers were spread across the floor. The air was amerced with butterflies and the view was breath taking. We could see now that it was defiantly an island. We could see the rest of the group they were sitting on a rock. In the distance we could see another island. “We should make a map of this,” suggested Ralph. Jack reminded him that we didn’t have paper so I said that we should use bark from trees and use black powder from rocks as ink. We headed down the side of the mountain and effulgence faded over me. I actually felt confident for once. We were going to survive. I am writing this letter as a story of our lives stranded on this island. Until next time, Simon.
